How the birth card is calculated
This calculator follows the method made popular by the tarot author Mary K. Greer. Add your birth month, day and year as whole numbers. For 23 July 1985, that's 7 + 23 + 1985 = 2015.
Then add up the digits of the total (2 + 0 + 1 + 5 = 8), and keep going until the number is 22 or less. That number is your first card, the personality card. If it's 10 or more, add its digits again for the next card, until you reach a single digit: the soul card.
So 19 gives The Sun, Wheel of Fortune and The Magician, while 8 gives Strength alone. 22 stands for The Fool, numbered 0 in the deck, and pairs with The Emperor (2 + 2 = 4). Numbers follow the classic 1909 deck, where Strength is 8 and Justice is 11.
Questions about tarot birth cards
What is a tarot birth card?
It's a Major Arcana card worked out from your date of birth. Many readers treat it as a lifelong theme: a card to come back to and reflect on, rather than a fixed description of who you are.
Why do I have two or three cards?
When the first number is 10 or more, its digits add up to another card, so the cards form a chain. The first is your personality card, the last your soul card, and a middle card links the two.
Why do I only have one card?
If your date adds up to a single digit, there's nothing left to add up, so the same card is both your personality card and your soul card.
Can my birth cards change?
No. They come from your date of birth, so they stay the same. How you relate to them can change a lot over the years.
Do you store my date of birth?
No. It's only used to work out your cards and isn't saved. If you choose to save your birth cards, we keep the date in your browser for 30 days so we can fill it in when you sign up.
Do birth cards predict my future?
No. Birth cards are a prompt for reflection and entertainment, not a forecast or a personality test.
